The Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Co. Ltd. was formed in 1909 to operate a ferry and steam tramway service connecting Auckland with Takapuna, a suburb across the harbour. The ferry was to operate from Auckland City to Bayswater (O'Neills Point), and the tram was to run from Bayswater to Takapuna, with a circular route around Lake Pupuke, the total distance for the return trip being 11 miles. A gauge of 4ft 8 1/2in. was adopted for the track, which was laid with tramway type rails.
