摘要

Barry could not be called conventional. His restless and enquiring mind made him different. With Barry one came to expect the unexpected. He was a great and creative New Zealander who has left his mark on this country in so many ways, not just Driving Creek Railway (DCR) and Potteries. Barry was born in New Plymouth on 26 October 1935, the eldest son of Maurice and Shirley Brickell.Hisfather was originally an engineer and later meteorologist. In 1942 the family shifted to Auckland and Barry attended Vauxhall Primary School. When Barry was eight or nine, his teacher brought a crude potter's wheel into the classroom and some clay. He showed the class how to make a pot. Barry made his first pot that day, and his enthusiasm for pottery took off. He also started to develop a fascination for railways and steam, particularly the engineering aspects.
