2014 was a standout year for Ryman Healthcare's managing director, Simon Challies, as he scooped up both the prestigious Deloitte Top 200 Executive of the Year award and was also named the Herald Business Leader of the Year 2014. But, while very pleased with the accolades, he told Management he was feeling somewhat over-exposed, media-wise, stressing the awards were not about him, but about the group of people at Ryman. "So many people have been with the company since the beginning and in a real sense we are part owners of it." At an investors' presentation in Melbourne he was told that the most impressive thing about the Ryman team was that they were so passionate about what they did, that it was like meeting the founders of the company. And the numbers speak for themselves. The company's half year report to September 30, 2014, issued in December, shows underlying profit up 13 percent to $66.3 million, a new record; dividend raised 13 percent to 6.3 cents and the company had a record build for the first half with 450 units and beds completed.
