The Higher Education Committee of the National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE), Great Britain's subject association for creative writing, has recently completed two 'benchmark statements'. One of these relates to teaching and learning of creative writing at undergraduate level in Great Britain; one relates to research, as well as to teaching and learning of creative writing at graduate level. These are significant documents, not only for Great Britain, but for those learning and teaching creative writing in universities and colleges worldwide. Great Britain has not before had dedicated statements about the nature of creative writing learning in higher education; it has before had statements about the nature of university research in creative writing. Whatever impact British creative writing might or might not have on various countries, there's little doubt that Great Britain has played a major global role in the development of the writing arts-particularly, of course, creative writing in the English language.
