Scientists at a government lab in Washington State are developing a natural process they say could make cleanup of explosives at old military bases faster, cheaper, and safer. The new technology—called the "environmentally benign digestion process" (EBDP)—uses enzymes found in spinach and other natural compounds that can eat, digest, and render harmless explosives such as TNT, says Manish Shah, who is directing the EBDP project at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash.
