New-Generation Fuels Initiative Being Planned

The Department of Energy (DOE) will coordinate other federal agencies and private industry in an advanced fuels initiative growing out of the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV). Though the initiative was described as being in the very early stages, DOE has tasked Pandit Patil, director of the department's Office of Advanced Automotive Technologies, to lead it. Major oil companies Exxon, Amoco, Arco, and Mobil, which have taken part in an ad-hoc dialogue with DOE over the past year, are expected to participate.
