Lane Named To Lead OSTP

Neal Lane, director of the National Science Foundation, has been selected by President Clinton to serve as the next director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and as his personal adviser on matters relating to science. The announcement, made in Philadelphia on February 13, followed Clinton's acceptance of the resignation of John Gibbons, who has served as OSTP director since the start of Clinton's presidency. Clinton has named Rita Colwell, a microbiologist and president of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, to serve as the new director of NSF. Colwell, a former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, was recently nominated for the NSF deputy director's post (NTW, Jan. 20, p. 9).
