Bat virus stalks fruit pickers

Thousands of fruit pickers and wildlife officers in Australia are being offered rabies vaccination after a woman who was caring for sick and injured fruit bats developed a rabies-like illness. The woman, from Rockhampton on the central Queensland coast, has been infected with a previously unknown type of lyssavirus, the group of viruses that includes rabies. She contracted the disease after being scratched by a fruit bat.
