Psychology has always had to fight for its place in the pantheon of "true" sciences. But the battle is getting harder. Last year Robert Walker, chairman of the US Congressional committee on science, declared that government funding of the behavioural sciences should be axed because their research pandered more to political correctness than scientific necessity. And last week, Britain's Medical Research Council announced plans to close one of its three remaining psychological research centres, the Cognitive Development Unit at University College London (see This Week, p 9).
