Ammonia, dust and bacterial toxins regularly reach high enough concentrations in Europe's farm buildings to harm both farm workers and animals. Intensive poultry farms are the worst offenders. Roger Phillips of the Silsoe Research Institute in Bedfordshire led a four-year study of farm buildings in Britain, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands for the European Commission.
