A new polymer that can monitor the level of glucose in blood has improved the prospects of creating an implant for diabetics that could mimic the pancreas. In healthy people, the pancreas maakes the hormone insulin, which regulates levels of glucose in the blood. Because diabetics are unable to make their own insulin, they must inject the hormone when the levels of glucose are too high. Both high and low blood glucose levels are life-threatening conditions, so diabetics may have to take regular blood samples and check their sugar levels with portable monitors.
