A bizarre disorder that makes patients believe that their parents are impostors is shedding light on how the brain works, say researchers in the US. Vilayanur Ramachandran and William Hirstein of the University of California at San Diego have been working with a patient who suffers from a rare condition known as Capgras syndrome. Following accidents that cause damage to the brain, usually to the right side, patients with this disorder imagine that members of their families are impostors. Otherwise, they are often perfectly lucid.
