We humans weave myths to explain the powerful and inexplicable in life. The ancient Greeks, for instance, gave their gods human characteristics not just as a way of slipping them into the action at difficult moments, but to make them comprehensible. Miracles and the beatification that often follows play a similar role in Christianity. It is no accident that the Church seldom distances itself all that far from weeping statues, bleeding stigmata and other strange phenomena.
