Almost every kind of commercial organisation seems to be in need of some sort of programmer these days. But finding recruits with the right sort of skills proves a huge headache for managers in the software industry. The Human Resources Group of the Computer Software and Services Association (CSSA), London, has surveyed just what its member firms now want. Over the last 12 months demand for people skilled in Windows NT software has almost doubled. And the need for employees able to programme in C, C~(++), visual basic and CICS is growing fast. Trish Boag, head of human resourcing at KPMG Management Consulting and chair of the CSSA Human Resources group, says the shortage of good European recruits with top software skills is being exacerbated by the US trying to lure them away with 75 000 work permits to fill its ever-growing needs for such ex-perts.
