Last month an experiment at the LHC observed for the first time a peculiar correlation among particles. The effect might have several explanations, including (at low probability, in my opinion) the formation of a hot, dense state of matter, possibly even the quark-gluon plasma which is thought to have filled the universe in its first nanoseconds, More work is needed to test these different ideas, but nonetheless it shows the remarkable sensitivity of the LHC experiments to new phenomena.
