Shopkeepers and tobacco companies throughout the US face new restrictions on the sale and marketing of cigarettes to young people.rnThe rules, announced on 19 March, are the first to be introduced by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since Congress gave the agency authority to regulate tobacco last year.rnFrom 22 June, it will be a federal crime to sell cigarettes or rnsmokeless tobacco to people under 18. Shopkeepers will have to ask for photo ID when selling the products. Most states already restrict the sale and marketing of tobacco, but the federal rules will bring uniformity, as well as tougher punishments.
