Hawks and vultures are masters of spiralling upwards in rising thermals. But flying around in search of a free lift is not terribly efficient so Salah Sukkarieh of the Australian Centre for Field Robotics in Sydney thinks these birds have learned to recognise visual cues for thermals, such as towering cumulus clouds surrounded by blue sky.
