George is dead - but his genome lives on. Lonesome George, last of the Pinta Island tortoises and the rarest animal in the world, was found dead on Sunday. Hope remains for his subspecies, though, because the genes have probably survived.About 14 subspecies of giant tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra) once lived on the Galapagos Islands.
