The collapse of the USSR created the largest ever human-made carbon sink. In 1991, the Soviet Union formally split into separate republics. The loss of government subsidies and privatisation of land led to one of the biggest land-use changes of the 20th century: 455,000 square kilometres of farmland were abandoned.
