Wind, wave and solar power plants are unforgiving about when they generate electricity, so these renewable sources will only reach their full potential if we can store, at a large scale, the energy they generate when demand is low. Excess renewable energy can be stored as compressed air, or by pumping water from a lower reservoir into a higher one.
