With fewer than 100 remaining in the Scottish highlands, the UK's last surviving wildcats (Felissilvestris) now face a new peril - the cat form of HI V. Vets at the University of Edinburgh have found the feline immunodeficiency virus in 23 feral and hybrid cats from around Scotland, including in Morvern, a priority wildcat conservation area. The Arctic doomsday seed vault has dispensed its first seeds. Opened on the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago in 2008 to protect crops from disease or nuclear war, it is sending wheat and barley seeds to replace those in a gene bank near Aleppo, Syria, that has been damaged by war.
