Pledges to cut carbon emissions aren't enough to limit warming to 2 ℃, says the International Energy Agency. To reach that target, we should peak our emissions by 2020, by improving energy efficiency, phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, moth balling the dirtiest coal power plants and boosting renewables. There may not be hellfire, but there's brimstone deep below us in Earth's core. Geologists estimate that 90 per cent of Earth's sulphur - known by ancient alchemists as brimstone -is in the core (Geochemical Perspectives Letters, doi.org/5fc).
