A paralysed woman has learned to spell words and communicate via electrodes in her brain. It is the first time a person has been able to use a brain-computer interface at home in their daily life. "It's special to be the first," Hanneke De Bruijne, told New Scientist. De Bruijne is 58 years old and has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - a disease that ravages nerve cells. Within a couple of years of her diagnosis in 2008, she could no longer breathe by herself and needed a ventilator. "All muscles are paralysed. I can only move my eyes," says De Bruijne.
