IF YOU end up in a hospital in Europe, you have a 1 in 20 chance of acquiring an infection. Despite campaigns and gel dispensers, one of the leading causes is still poor hand hygiene. In a recent pilot study, researchers may have found the solution. Using a combination of depth cameras and computer-vision algorithms, they tracked people around two hospital wards and automatically identified when they used gel dispensers. The trial was so successful that the group is going to kit out three hospitals for a year, to see if the system can reduce the acquired infections.
