Viasat downplays HDTV despite rival's roll-out

Modern Times Group this week insisted that it would not rush into launching high-definition television despite next month's aggressive launch of such services by rival Scandinavian pay-television group Canal Digital. MTG is not convinced that there is yet a sufficiently compelling consumer proposition or business case for the deployment of HDTV by its Viasat Broadcasting division. For the time being, it is giving greater priority to other new products such as the Viasat Plus personal video recorder (PVR), IPTV and DVB-H mobile-television. The company is also pushing Viasat Everywhere, its branded version of Sling Media's Slingbox device that allows viewers to watch their home pay-television services from anywhere via an internet connection.
