Pay-TV operators and manufacturers launch final bid to stop extra tax on receivers

European pay-television operators and manufacturers have launched a last-ditch attempt to keep their exemption from paying duty on set-top boxes imported into the European Union. They have warned that plans to scrap the exemption could undermine the move towards analogue switch-off by pushing up the price of digital reception equipment. But the European Commission's tax directorate is sticking to its plan to reclassify receivers, which would effectively stop the exemption.
