BSkyB, the UK pay-television operator, this week defended its subscriber retention practices and denied that it had "phantom customers" as it reported its highest net subscriber additions for three years. The company hit out at claims that it had been giving away 12-month subscriptions to customers in the run-up to Christmas in order to retain customers that might have otherwise have churned. Announcing BSkyB's results for the six months ending December 31, chief executive James Murdoch said: "We always try to keep customers. We have used tactical offers. Sure we use promotions to say, 'Why don't you stick around and try these movies', and it generally works.
