Sling Media plots mobile expansion

Sling Media, the television technology company, is to extend the availability of its "place-shifting" product to all 3G mobile-telephone networks in the UK to provide greater flexibility to owners of its Slingbox device. The company, which was this week acquired by US satellite-television operator Echostar Communications for US$380 million (￡190 million), has also launched two products in the UK, replacing the original Slingbox device that debuted in May 2006. The devices allow users to access their digital-television set-top boxes from anywhere in the world via a broadband connection. The SlingPlayer Mobile application, compatible with the Symbian mobile-data operating system, allows Slingbox owners to access and control their digital-television set-top boxes through certain 3G handsets.
