Concerns mount over telecoms proposals

European Commission plans to assume greater powers over telecommunications regulation, at the expense of member states, are provoking increasing concern among national regulators and industry players. The proposed European Electronics Communications Market Authority would replace the European Regulators Group (ERG), an advisory body made up of the heads of national authorities, to ensure the consistent application of electronic communications regulation across the 27 member states. A draft document of the Commission's plans, seen by New Media Markets, states: "Almost 10 years after the full liberalisation of markets and despite significant progress on the harmonisation of regulation in electronic communications, there is a lack of consistency in the way common rules are applied throughout the enlarged EU.
