Spanish channels mull pay-TV proposal

Spanish broadcasters are considering a proposal to launch a pay-television service on the country's digital-terrestrial network. Executives involved in the launches of pay-television on digital-terrestrial platforms in Sweden and Finland (Boxer and Plus TV) have put forward a plan based on pay-per-view television. Under the proposal, a pay-television platform operator, called B3, would offer content including Champions' League football, top series such as CS/and Spain's most popular reality shows. In a presentation to broadcasters, which New Media Markets has seen, B3 says that it would guarantee an annual advertising spend on each participating channel as well as meeting some of its transmission costs. The presentation says that a pay-television service on the digital-terrestrial platform could boost die number of pay-television homes in Spain from 3.5 million at the end of 2006 to 8.3 million in 2010. The B3 proposal comes as transmission company Abertis Telecom and members of the ImpulsaTDT industry association evaluate a trial of pay-per-view and other services on the digital-terrestrial platform.
