MPs push to revise Communications Act

The UK 2003 Communications Act has become outdated and needs to be substantially revised due to the rapid advancement of technology and convergence, MPs have warned. The Act, which received Royal Assent in July 2003, created one of Europe's first converged communications regulators in Ofcom, yet MPs will hold preliminary hearings in the autumn to discuss the extent to which changes may be needed to better cope with the UK's evolving communications industry. Derek Wyatt, Labour MP and vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Media Group, said that technology had moved forward dramatically since the act was passed, especially with regard to the internet, and that "greater governance was needed to get our house in order".
