Only one third of homes with high-definition television sets were able to view content in HDTV format at the end of 2006, according to a report from Informa Telecoms & Media. Of the 48.2 million global homes with HD sets last year, only 16.4 million had the necessary decoders and access to free or subscription content to take advantage of the technology. The report, HDTV: A Global Analysis, forecasts a worldwide total of 151 million homes with "HD-ready" sets by 2011 and says that 105 million of these (69.4 per cent) will be used to receive content in high-definition format.
