Premiere, the German pay-television company backed by News Corporation, is to focus on attracting and retaining fully paid-up monthly subscribers and phase out all short-term or discounted subscription offers over the coming months. The company said this week that it would no longer offer discounts on subscription rates for groups such as students and journalists. Students had previously been able to subscribe to Premiere's sport, football, film and family packages for a total of E∪D24.99 (£20.97) a month, a45-per-cent discount on the full subscription price of E∪D44.99. The freeze on discounts marks the latest step towards stabilising Premiere's basic monthly subscriber base and forms part of an extensive strategic review of the company by News Corporation, which holds a 25.01-per-cent stake in Premiere.
