Freeview 2.0 Starts To Take Shape As Broadcasters Consider Canvas

The BBC has invited the other UK public-service broadcasters - ITV, Channel 4 and Five - to join its "Project Canvas" initiative to create standards for delivering programmes via broadband to the television and secure the future of Freeview. It is understood that ITV has agreed to work with the BBC on Canvas, while Channel 4 and Five are still considering the proposal. The financial implications of joining the project are likely to play an important part in their decisions. Project Canvas was revealed by the BBC last month as a means to create an open and standardised IPTV platform that would take programmes delivered via the open internet to television sets (NMM October 24, 2008). Canvas would provide an IP on-demand element of a hybrid, sitting alongside linear digital-terrestrial or satellite broadcasts. A large focus of the project concerns the creation of what is being called "Freeview 2.0".
