Bskyb Evolves 'project Darwin' As Pressure Piles On Kangaroo

BSkyB's plan to launch a "true" video-on-demand service, known internally as "Project Darwin", is on track to launch next year, according to the company providing the core technology. It is understood that BSkyB will avoid an expensive investment in a managed IPTV network to deliver on-demand video to its customers and will instead use the open internet to deliver video "over the top". The main technology involved is Fusion, a new middleware system from NDS, the television technology company which, like BSkyB, has News Corporation as its main shareholder. Fusion marries broadcast with online technologies to create a "broadband internet-compatible middleware" that can handle web applications such as Adobe's Flash player as well as broadcast content to allow slicker onscreen presentation.
