Boxer, the Swedish digital-terrestrial television operator, last week beat two Scandinavian rivals to win a 12-year licence to provide digital-terrestrial television in Denmark. At the same time, one of the defeated candidates in the Danish contest made clear its ambition to launch a pay-television service on the Swedish digital-terrestrial platform to challenge Boxer. Denmark's Ministry of Cultures Radio and Television Board awarded Boxer the licence to operate a digital-terrestrial network and be its "gatekeeper" largely on the grounds that the Swedish company would be a new entrant to the market. The two other candidates, Modern Times Group's Viasat and Norwegian telecommunications and television operator Telenor, already have Danish-based operations in the television sector.
