Japanese Steelmakers To Start Joint Dust Recycling

Nippon Steel Corp and Kobe Steel Ltd are to set up a joint venture (JV) to recycle steel dust and iron ore powder from that which is generated in steel mills. The joint venture, to be named Nittetsu Shinko Metal Refine Co, was due to be established in mid-October, with 70% of the JV owned by Nippon Steel and the rest by Kobe Steel. Nittetsu Shinko, to be located in Nippon Steel's Hirohata works in Himeji in the western Japan prefecture of Hyogo, will get a ￥20 billion furnace to procure iron and zinc from the dust and powder. The facility will be capable of processing 400 kt of steel dust and iron ore powder a year. Its annual output capacities will be 300 kt for direct-reduced iron and 5 kt for zinc.
