Australian researchers are a step closer to turning plants into "biofactories" capable of producing oils that can be used to replace petrochemicals used to manufacture a range of products.rnScientists working within the joint Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO)/Grains Research and Development Corp Crop Biofactories Initiative (CBI) have managed to accumulating 30% of an unusual fatty acid (UFA) in the plant, Arabidopsis.rnUFAs are usually sourced from petrochemicals to produce plastics, paints and cosmetics.
