Hybrid fuel cell is small enough to fit in your hand

Sony Corp, Japan, has prototyped a fuel cell system that measures just 50 mm × 30 mm-small enough to fit in one hand. The system combines a fuel cell, a lithium (Li)-polymer secondary battery and a control circuit.rnThis is the first time that Sony has revealed the prototype. The company exhibited the evaluation results of the system at Small Fuel Cells 2008, which took place in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 30 April-2 May.rnAs for the fuel cells for mobile devices, Sony has already announced the evaluation results of a fullerene-type solid polymer electrolyte membrane and membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) developed with the membrane. This time, the company says it expects to commercialize the new fuel-cell system.
