FCC Co Ltd of Japan has developed a paper catalyst to purify automobile exhaust emissions using a wet papermaking process (paper-pressing), which is more commonly used by the company for the manufacture of friction materials for automobile clutches. The company makes the exhaust gas purification catalytic material (paper catalyst) by adding catalytic components to the paper during the paper-pressing stage of the production process. Making the most of the characteristic pores of paper that measure 10-20 μm in diameter for the reaction to purify exhaust fumes, the technology achieves higher purification performance compared with other existing technologies, FCC says. FFC has succeeded in the development of a catalyst that can purify exhaust fumes without using the expensive metals that have been used as catalytic components thus far. Boasting high heat resistance, the paper's purification performance will not deteriorate, even at temperatures as high as 1000℃.
