An Israel-based fabrication unit (fab) for 200mm wafers has been assigned by Intel Corp to Numonyx BV for the production of NOR flash memory. The facility is in the process of moving its manufacturing to 45 nm-a step it plans to complete in the fourth quarter of 2008. According to Numonyx, The Israeli plant is on course to be the first NOR flash fab to produce in 45 nm. By 2009, the plant is expected to reach full output, producing a weekly total of 8000 8-inch wafers. Currently, the plant produces 5000-6000 wafers a week. The facility, to be renamed Fab 1, is located in Kiryat Gat in Southern Israel and currently produces in 65 nm process technology. Numonyx Israel employs 1300 workers, all of them former employees of Intel, in addition to 1000 contract workers. Israel is expected to employ about 15% of the total Numonyx workforce.
