High speed rail: how would the UK approach this challenge?

In response to Peter Wiltshire's concerns about the viability of high speed rail in this country (NCE 18 November), he might perhaps consider expanding his list to the following countries with high speed rail systems and similar population densities to the UK:1. Taiwan 639/km~2 2.South Korea 487 3. Netherlands 400 4. (England 395) 5. Belgium 355 6.Japan 337 His question about whether to prioritise long or short distance traffic is an interesting one. It seems to me that the best way to accommodate off existing lines and onto new ones, freeing up . a huge amount of capacity for services.
