Singing the praises of the unsung engineering hero

A theme of David Orr's presidential year in 2007 was the unsung hero of civil engineering who has, over the past 250 years, delivered our infrastructure. Often civil engineers are neglected because only their name is known; their personality and collective achievements have been lost over time.This is undoubtedly one reason that Robert Stephenson's "heritage" in terms of his assistants and pupils is much clearer and better known than that of Isambard Kingdom Brunei. While Stephenson mentored four ICE presidents: TE Harrison, GR Stephenson, GB Bruce and G Berkley, Brunei's assistants are anonymous in comparison.
