Whitechapel station design changes generate 15% cost saving for Crossrail

Design changes have generated savings of 15% on Crossrail's Whitechapel station project, according to the project team. Consultant Hyder major projects director Nigel Hayward told NCE"s London Rail Conference 2013 that moving away from the original design to one that used closer integration with London Overground and London Underground had created cost savings and a more compact station. "Most of these savings were due to reduced excavation," he said. "Design decisions we made, such as putting the station concourse above ground, massively reduced the amount of excavation that was needed."
