Responding to Quentin Brogda-le's letter relating to building nicknames (NCE 11-18 July), I would say that he is missing the point. The habit of referring to buildings or structures by using other objects generally stems from the desire to communicate with the general population. Most of the nicknames around originate from the media. For example 30 St Mary Axe is nicknamed the Gherkin; 122 Leadenhall Street is nicknamed the Cheesegrater; and Gravelly Hill Interchange is nicknamed Spaghetti Junction. Personally, I consider it most important to engage with the general population especially in the case of "landmark" buildings, using Brogdale's phraseology.
