Engineers have backed calls by new High Speed 2 boss David Higgins to bring forward work on the northern section of the railway. Chairman David Higgins said on Monday a section north of the London-to-Birmingham first phase could be built earlier to serve a newly introduced interchange station at Crewe. ICE director general Nick Baveystock said there was no engineering reason not to ensure the entire scheme to Leeds and Manchester was operational before the original 2033 opening date. Higgins has also proposed to bring this date forward by three years.
