Infrastructure's economic cost often dominates debate about the merits of a project. But, increasingly, engineers are being compelled to embed social value into the way projects are designed and delivered. The need to focus on social outcomes is not a new concept for the industry, and yet it is one that is too often overlooked. Mott MacDonald global practice leader for social outcomes Kerry Scott says infrastructure should serve the needs of communities regardless of whether it is publicly or privately funded. "We need to make sure that we are squarely focused on the ultimate user and their needs, not just the technical specification of an asset," she says.
