The Internet community worldwide is currently working on the deployment of DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC). This new technology is designed to prevent hackers from redirecting traffic from legitimate websites to fraudulent ones, and may increase Internet security for all.rnThe Domain Name System (DNS), while being an integral part of the backbone of the Internet, was created to act solely as a hierarchical, distributed naming system and therefore lacks inherent security features. This could potentially expose Internet users to attacks that exploit this key weakness in the DNS architecture. The DNS weakness gives hackers the opportunity to put up a false DNS server that can intercept legitimate website addresses. This means that when users type in the name of a legitimate website, they are taken to a fraudulent one instead, which puts them at risk of phishing and other scams. Email and Voice over IP (VoIP) calls could also be vulnerable to attacks whereby messages could be redirected or copied by a third party.
