It was an extraordinary milestone in modern military history when the White House on June 10 announced that, for the first time, the Medal of Honor would be awarded to a living veteran of the Iraq war. The valor award will be bestowed on David G. Bellavia, who was an Army staff sergeant in late 2004 during the second Battle of Fallujah. During the bloody, block-by-block street fighting, Bellavia's squad got pinned down in a building.
