GPS World reported China's plans to expand its Loran coverage with three new transmitter sites, and suggested that this indicates a wider plan to provide a backup system for GNSS. The expansion of the terrestrial Loran positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) system was revealed in a paper published in Sensors in August (Baorong et al. 2020). The paper states that"...the vulnerability of GNSS to unintentional and intentional interference signals can be found frequently nowadays. For national security and economic effectiveness, a reliable and complementary navigation system is needed desperately. The suitability of the Loran for a backup navigation system has been evaluated and reported." According to GPS World, the Sensors paper is "the first known documentation in over a decade of specific Chinese intentions regarding its Loran system."
